Memo Text

Recently, the Arkansas State Board of Education approved ancillary licenses for additional areas. An ancillary license is a five (5)-year renewable license, issued by the State Board that does not require prior classroom teaching experience.  The ancillary license allows the holder to practice in Arkansas public schools, in a licensure area identified, in the Rules Governing Educator Licensure, effective April 30, 2018.

The two new ancillary license areas, English to Speakers of Other Languages, ESOL K-12, and Dyslexia K-12 were approved by the Arkansas State Board of Education on August 9, 2018.  In addition to meeting the application requirements as outlined in Rules Governing Educator Licensure, effective April 30, 2018, the candidate must meet requirements listed below:

  • An applicant for an ancillary license in English to Speakers of Other Languages, ESOL K-12, area code #100, shall also submit an official transcript documenting an awarded Master’s degree or higher degree, from an accredited college or university, in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, or equivalent ESOL Master’s degree.  Praxis exam #5362 English to Speakers of Other Languages with a passing score of 155 or higher is required.

  • An applicant for an ancillary license in Dyslexia shall also submit documentation to show current certification as a Certified Academic Language Therapist, CALT, from the Academic Language Therapy Association, ALTA.  CALT requirements attached.

*Requirements for the endorsement areas #247 ESOL K-12 and #527 Dyslexia to a standard content area license remain the same and are not related to the ancillary license requirements.
