The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Office of Computer Science is pleased to continue the #ARKidsCanCode / #CSforAR Computer Science Enrollment Contest for the 2020-2021 school year.

Arkansas will honor schools for their outstanding efforts in promoting computer science education this coming school year.

  • Two* schools with the largest number of students enrolled in computer science courses for the competition cycle school year will each be recognized and receive a $5,000.00 technology award.
  • Two* schools with the largest percentage of students enrolled in computer science courses, as compared to total school enrollment, will each be recognized and receive a $5,000.00 technology award.
  • Two* schools with the largest percentage increase of students enrolled in computer science courses in the competition cycle school year, as compared to computer science course enrollment in the prior school year, will each be recognized and receive a $5,000.00 technology award.

             

In addition, one school will be selected via drawing to win a $5,000.00 technology award**. Entries into the drawing are earned through the following:

Total Enrollment Percentages in ADE/ARCareerEd Approved Computer Science Courses - Schools with CS student enrollment percentages (based on total student population):

  • greater than or equal to 7.5% and less than or equal to 10%, will receive 1 entry;
  • greater than 10% and less than or equal to 15%, will receive 2 entries;
  • greater than 15% and less than or equal to 20%, will receive 3 entries;
  • greater than 20% and less than or equal to 25%, will receive 4 entries;
  • greater than 25% and less than or equal to 30%, will receive 5 entries; and
  • greater than 30%, will receive 6 entries.

Growth in Enrollment Percentages in Baseline CS Courses - Schools with CS student enrollment percentage growth (based on percentage increase from 2018-2019 to 2019-2020):

  • greater than or equal to 7.5% and less than or equal to 10%, will receive 1 entry;
  • greater than 10% and less than or equal to 15%, will receive 2 entries;
  • greater than 15% and less than or equal to 20%, will receive 3 entries;
  • greater than 20% and less than or equal to 25%, will receive 4 entries;
  • greater than 25% and less than or equal to 30%, will receive 5 entries; and
  • greater than 30%, will receive 6 entries.

Total Female Enrollment Percentage in ADE/ARCareerEd Approved Computer Science Courses - Schools with Female CS student enrollment percentages (based on total student population):

  • greater than or equal to 7.5% and less than or equal to 10%, will receive 1 entry;
  • greater than 10% and less than or equal to 15%, will receive 2 entries;
  • greater than 15% and less than or equal to 20%, will receive 3 entries;
  • greater than 20% and less than or equal to 25%, will receive 4 entries;
  • greater than 25% and less than or equal to 30%, will receive 5 entries; and
  • greater than 30%, will receive 6 entries.

Enrollment calculations/counts will be based on fall Cycle 2 enrollment numbers in the ADE/ARCareerEd approved computer science courses which include the following:

  • Computer Science with Programming/ Coding Emphasis
  • Mobile Application Development
  • Advanced Programming
  • Advanced Programming: Game Design
  • Computer Science with Networking/ Hardware Emphasis
  • Robotics
  • Advanced Networking
  • Computer Science with Information Security Emphasis
  • Advanced Information Security
  • College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science Principles
  • College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science A
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Computer Science SL
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Computer Science HL
  • Computer Science Independent Study
  • Computer Science Internship
  • ADE Approved Concurrent Credit Computer Science
  • ADE Approved Weighted Concurrent Credit Computer Science

           

 

*One school with at least 1,000 students and one school with fewer than 1,000 students will be recognized in each category.

**To be eligible for the technology prize package, schools must have at least one student enrolled in a computer science baseline course.
