Memo Text
Every Novice Teacher (NT) with no experience-1st year, 1 year of experience-2nd year, and 2 years of experience-3rd year, licensed or non-licensed, in state and from out-of-state will receive mentoring/induction support for his or her first three years of employment. The NT mentoring program is coordinated in partnership with the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the state’s Education Service Cooperatives (ESC). DESE provides funding and resources to the ESCs to facilitate mentoring of NTs. Districts will be responsible for ensuring that their NTs will be provided mentoring support. A district who does not utilize mentoring through their cooperative will notify the ESC and the DESE Office of Educator Effectiveness of their local plans by July 1, 2021. Districts who opt out of utilizing ESCs for mentoring support must use their own district funding and may be monitored by the DESE.
Upon hiring, school districts are required to register NTs in the link below. Non-compliance will result in a standards violation through Public School Accountability.
Mentoring is provided for the following NTs:
- NTs (including counselors or library media specialist and teachers hired under a waiver from licensure with less than three years of teaching experience)
- NTs from out of state who have had no prior teaching experience or have not completed three full years of teaching
- NTs presently in alternative educator preparation programs such as ABCTE, APPEL, ATC, MAT, PPTL, TFA, Prism Teacher Institute, and eStem Residency.
