ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF THE WHOLE CHILD TO
PROMOTE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
The Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is
pleased to announce the Coordinated School Health (CSH) 2nd
quarterly meeting will be held Wednesday, November 3, 2021. The CSH meeting
will focus on the nicotine use among Arkansas’ youth, along with prevention and
cessation strategies for schools.
The DESE, in partnership with the Arkansas Department of
Health (ADH), provides professional development and resources to assist school
personnel with addressing the needs of the whole child in the school setting.
The Coordinated School Health Program and activities are supported with funding
provided to the DESE through the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention RFA-DP18-1801 Improving Student Health and
Academic Achievement through Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Management of
Chronic Disease grant funding. This program is designed to develop the
capacity of school personnel to address today’s most
relevant public health issues inhibiting academic achievement.
Objectives for the CSH 2nd quarter meeting
include the following:
- Updated statistics on tobacco and e-cigarette use among Arkansas youth
- Provide youth prevention and cessation supports and resources for schools
- Share examples of how local policy can support cessation support and intervention
Participants may expect to gain information and resources
from content experts. Each meeting will include hands-on activities to assess
and plan for implementing the strategies learned. The CSH meetings are open to
all Arkansas public school district personnel. District wellness committee
chairs are strongly encouraged to attend.
