The Digital Learning Unit is excited to offer virtual training opportunities this summer! We have prepared a series of engaging learning opportunities to help meet the demands of today's classroom teachers. We look forward to seeing you and playing a role in your professional development.

Advancing to Student-Focused Learning

Transforming your classroom to give more student control through voice and choice can be challenging, and this type of environment shifts the teacher's role to a facilitator of learning. This session will set the stage by defining blended learning, researching digital learning theories, and exploring strategies that promote student-focused learning. We will learn about culture, classroom management, equity, and innovative technology promoting student agency, all of which are essential components as we move to student-focused learning!

Digital Strategies and Resources to Enhance Engagement with Families

Are you hoping to find resources to help engage your parents? This session is designed to help you find those resources as well as develop them for your own classroom or school. We will look at best practices on engaging families as well as barriers to address as we help families navigate the digital world. We will also look at best practices for engaging parents on social media. This course will meet the 2022-23 parent engagement professional development 2-hour requirement.

How to Design a Digital Lesson

This class will focus on the components of an effective digital lesson. Participants will take a face-to-face lesson and transition it to a digital lesson, or start a digital lesson from scratch, applying evidence-based approaches for effective digital lesson design. Participants will evaluate the process of building an effective digital lesson and their own digital lesson product using a rubric for digital lesson design. Topics include Universal Design for Learning, Backwards Design, Alignment, Accessibility, and Instructional Materials & Digital Tools. By plugging into this pre-conference class, teachers will find the support they need to recharge their lesson plans and their learners' engagement with the intentionally designed learning experience that they planned.

Social-Emotional Learning: Filling Your Bucket from a Digital Perspective

This is a two-part session that breaks apart the G.U.I.D.E. for life into each part of the G (Growth), U (Understanding), I (Interaction), D (Decisions), and E (Empathy) and focuses on applying with fidelity the online, course-embedded elements of SEL and resources of the G.U.I.D.E. for Life to equip students for personal and academic success at home, school, college, career, and in the community today and in the future. Through this professional learning experience, participants will learn how to supplement pre-packaged digital elements and programs of SEL and the resources of the Guide for Life and bring them full circle. Educators will be able to gain a toolbox of resources that address leveraging all forms of communication, incorporating SEL G.U.I.D.E. for Life Personal Competency Skills into their content, and with a learner-centric approach take systematic steps to interact, invest, and maximize every opportunity to support and build capacity in students. Learn how to take the SEL G.U.I.D.E. for Life Personal Competency Skills that are at the center of the DESE Learning Services “Learning Lens'' and implement them with authenticity and fidelity.

Student Engagement Tools: Nearpod Take Learning to the Next Level

Are you looking for an interactive engagement tool to take student learning to the next level? If so, this session offers an opportunity to explore Nearpod, an interactive digital tool that can do just that! With Nearpod, students can participate in lessons that contain virtual reality, 3D objects, PhET simulations, and so much more. Interactive software features empower student voice through activities like open-ended questions, polls, quizzes, collaborative boards, gamified activities, and more! Students will learn while having fun. In this session, participants will complete four lessons on how to navigate the Nearpod platform.

Universal Design for Accelerated Learning

In this session, participants will be introduced to the Universal Design for Learning Framework. The participants will have the opportunity to explore the framework, identify strategies and practices they are already doing and determine ways they can incorporate additional strategies to further eliminate barriers to learning with all students. Participants will identify how to use technology and sound instructional practices to provide a full UDL experience for all learners that leads toward expert learning. After becoming familiar with the UDL framework, educators will have the opportunity to take a lesson and bring it through the UDL framework, applying strategies and approaches that can be implemented in classrooms, online platforms, and content.
